FameLab Cyprus Competition 2017

  1. The competition is organised by the British Council in cooperation with the European Office of Cyprus (henceforth called the Organisers), based in Nicosia. 
  2. The aim of the national FameLab® competition is to attract participants from Cyprus and to identify the best new talents in science communication and to promote science communication. 
  3. The deadline for the receipt of application forms is 31 January 2017. The Organisers have the right to extend or reduce the duration of the competition for force majeure. 
  4. Participants must be above 18 years old, citizens of the Republic of Cyprus (RoC) or citizens of third countries legally residing in the area under the control of the RoC for the last 6 months prior to the submission of their application, pursuing studies or working in a scientific field. Employees of the British Council or the European Office of Cyprus or their immediate relatives are not allowed to participate in the competition. 
  5. Participants will be given a maximum of three minutes (qualifying rounds and finals at national level as well as at international level) in which to impress the judges with an entertaining, original and scientifically accurate presentation. 
  6. At national level, participants need 2 different talks. One for the semi-final and another one for the final (talks need to be demonstrably different in content, though they can be in the same subject area). At international level, again the participants will need 2 different talks. One for the semi-final and another for the final if they get through. These talks CAN be ones they have used at national level preliminary or final. 
  7. Participants must complete and submit by 31/01/2017 the application form which can be downloaded from the FameLab® website at the European Office of Cyprus.The applications can be submitted email. 
  8. Completed application forms will be submitted to a panel of judges selected by the Organisers. 
  9. The competition winners will be announced on the FameLab® website as well as the British Council (Cyprus) and the European Office of Cyprus. 
  10. The prize for the ten finalists who qualify for the final round is a weekend Master Class in science communication, where they will have the opportunity to work with science communicators/media trainers and to improve their media presentation skills. Participation at the Master Class is compulsory and those not attending it, will not be allowed to participate at the national final. 
  11. The winner of the FameLab®- Cyprus 2016 competition will win an all-expenses paid trip to UK, where he/she will participate at the Cheltenham Science Festival in June of 2016. The prizes of the competition are personal and cannot be transferred to another person or exchanged for money. Additional prizes may be awarded, which will be announced in advance on FameLab® website. 
  12. The winner consents to appear in related promotional material and to have his/her name and photo or video used for the purposes of promotion by the Organisers, without receiving any remuneration. 
  13. Participation in the competition presupposes and entails unreserved acceptance of all the terms and conditions presented herewith. 
  14. Participation in the competition presupposes and entails explicit and unconditional consent to the Organisers to keep personal data. The data that the Organisers collect in the framework of this particular competition will be used exclusively for the needs of this competition, for statistical purposes, as well as for communication with the winner, unless stated otherwise during registration. Participants have the right to ask for a copy of the information the Organisers hold on him/her.
